Bottled Water Fundraiser

From LoveToKnow Charity

Are you wondering if a bottled water fundraiser is a good option for your charitable organization? Find out what's involved with operating this type of fundraiser and what kind of results you can expect in this exclusive expert interview with Lisa Harkey, owner of Custom H2O. Harkey's company bottles Artesian water in containers that can be custom labeled for fundraisers with an organization's logo, slogan, or other marketing message.

How can a charitable organization raise money with bottled water?

Harkey: Organizations can raise money in many ways with custom labeled bottled water. They can pre-sell by the case and then take delivery at the end of the selling period. This option allows us to know how many cases to produce. There are no quotas and there is no excess purchase that the organization has to absorb.

Schools can also sell the private water through their booster clubs and concession stands to raise additional income. You can get the students involved by having the bottles numbered, then during half time, call out the winning number for free 50 yard line tickets, etc. This helps create a desire to purchase the water and also drives support for the various sporting events.

This is just a sampling of ideas. With the water being private-labeled, most people are more than happy to help support their favorite nonprofit groups.

Why would a nonprofit organization opt to raise money with bottled water instead of a more traditional fundraiser?

Harkey: Water is a great fund-raiser; everyone drinks it! There are no quotas, and the participants do not have to pre-purchase and then sell what they’ve bought. By using private label water, they are pre-selling the water and we only produce what they actually need.

This is much better than programs that require minimum sales or pre-orders from the fundraising company. With such programs, if groups do not enough, they have to absorb the cost themselves. These types of fundraisers, many times, cost the participant more than they actually raise. You won't have that problem with a Custom H2O fundraiser.

Another reason a group might choose to sell custom labeled water is the "fit" of the product itself. Since most fund raising is done by children’s organizations, we need to offer them something healthy to market. What’s healthier than water?

What kind of profit margin can groups expect when marketing bottled water to raise money?

Harkey: We suggest that water be sold by the case which allows the organization to make 50% profit. The most common price would allow the organization to net $12.00 per case sold! What is the best way for a nonprofit group to approach selling custom bottled water? Once again, I suggest pre-selling. This allows you to measure your profit immediately without any cost for unsold inventory.

What types of groups typically enjoy the greatest fundraising success marketing bottled water?

Harkey: Many types of groups can benefit, including:

  • Church youth groups
  • Community athletic associations
  • Schools
  • Sports teams

What are the most important tips for success with this type of fundraiser?

Harkey: Pre-sell, Pre-sell, Pre-sell! Get out there and talk it up, get everyone excited and onboard to participate. Some groups have even created a competition amongst themselves, with prizes going to participants who sell the most. This drives the desire to get out and make the fundraiser a huge success.
