Cancer Research Funding

From LoveToKnow Charity

Cancer research funding comes from a vareity of places, but primarily it is found through the generosity and support of communities and the people who live in them.

Why Does Cancer Research Need Money?

Like many major illnesses, cancer is not a cut and dry disease. It can be extremely complex in its attack against the human body, and this in turn requires an even more complex treatment plan. This, combined with the fact there are so many different types of cancer taking lives each and every year, means that researchers are working hard to find a cure to as many varieties as possible. This research quickly becomes very expensive, and funding is rarely readily available in a healthcare system that already lacks the cash to cover basic operational expenses.

Because of this, cancer researchers venture out to find funding elsewhere, often in the form of public and private grants, as well as through fundraisers and organizations that depend upon people to donate time and financial resources toward finding the cure so many long for.

Where Does Cancer Research Funding Come From?

There are grants available for cancer research, such as the ones offered by the National Cancer Institute. However, these do not come close to covering all the costs of all the researchers currently working toward major medical advancement.

The majority of cancer research funding comes from annual events that help put money in the pockets of organizations that need it most. Below are some of the yearly happenings you may hear about in your own city or town.

Daffodil Days

The American Cancer Society puts on Daffodil Days all throughout the nation. For certain calendar days of each spring, you can purchase bouquets of daffodils to give to friends, family members and most importantly, cancer patients. It provides hope and encouragement to those suffering from this devastating disease, while also raising funds for the essential research that must continue on toward finding a cure. While individuals often purchase daffodils during Daffodil Days, local businesses can also make a generous donation to help in the fight against cancer.

=Race for the Cure

Probably one of the most prolific cancer fundraisers in the nation is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The annual walk/run takes place all across the United States and raises money for breast cancer awareness and research. This huge cancer non-profit was started by the sister of Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer. Today beyond the famous Race for the Cure, countless organizations, businesses and individuals are decked out in pink ribbons to promote the battle against breast cancer.

Your Own Suggestions

Sometimes major cancer research centers will ask for input from those who are looking for a way to help. Such is the case at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. One of the leaders in cancer treatment and research, St. Jude’s does not ever turn a family away regardless of their ability to pay for the services and treatment provided to them. Due to this fact (and many others), St. Jude’s racks up tremendous expenses each and every year that must be paid.

On their website, they invite individuals to suggest fundraiser ideas to help defray these costs. Current fundraising events include “Up Till Dawn”, where students all across the nation pull all-nighters to raise funding for childhood cancer research. Think you have a great idea? Submit your proposal via St. Jude’s site, or look into becoming a corporate sponsor if you own your own business or know someone who does.

Hope in the Future

With all the awareness being raised about this difficult disease, cancer research funding is becoming more prevalent and the future looks bright. While many types of cancer are still an uphill battle when it comes to finding a cure, many more are beginning to see breakthroughs and utilizing new treatment plans to bring more aggressive options to those who need it most.
