Charities of Princess Diana

From LoveToKnow Charity

The charities of Princess Diana reflected her investment in the future of not only her country, but the world. Born in 1961, Princess Diana gained worldwide fame during her courtship, engagement and subsequent marriage to His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales. She gave birth to two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Prior to her death in 1997, Princess Diana led a crusade against land mines that brought the issue to public attention around the world.

Help the Charities of Princess Diana

Although her charity work began in part due to her position as a member of the royal family, Princess Diana was personally involved with many of the charities she supported. During the 1980s and early 90s, she struggled with depression, bulimia and suicide. Despite her personal problems, she worked tirelessly to bring attention to the problems of the homeless, disabled, children, and those suffering from HIV or full-blown AIDS.

When Princess Diana's divorce from Prince Charles became final in 1996, she decided to dedicate her focus to six or seven specific charities. The Princess opposed the manufacture and use of landmines. She organized and participated in protests while also raising money to help the victims, particularly the children, of land mines. Many areas in Europe, Asia and Africa are decorated with land mines as a remnant of wars including World War II. Children, playing in fields, may inadvertently set off the landmines and lose life or limb.

In 1997, Princess Diana spoke at a landmines conference, lobbied in Washington D.C. as a part of the American Red Cross landmines campaign and met with Mother Theresa.

Princess Diana’s Dedicated Charities

The charities of Princess Diana in the last year of her life included:

  • Centrepoint Soho – The London based charity group works with homeless youth to provide education, support and services.
  • The Leprosy Mission – The non-denominational Christian organization seeks not only a cure, but an understanding of the causes of Leprosy while providing education, support and resources for the public and for those afflicted with the condition.
  • International Red Cross – Princess Diana worked with the British and American Red Cross organizations as well as the International Red Cross with regard to landmines and ending their proliferation.
  • National AIDS Trust – The National Aids Trust works to educate, support and research not only a cure for HIV and AIDs, but also to combat misinformation, distrust and prejudice against those suffering from the disease.
  • Great Ormond St Hospital – The hospital is dedicated to providing training in medicine and treatment for children’s specialists.
  • Royal Marsden NHS Trust – The first dedicated cancer treatment and research hospital.

Princess Diana’s Work Continued

After her untimely death in August of 1997, The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund was established in September of 1997. The grant-giving charity provides independent grants for humanitarian work all over the world. The fund’s mission is to champion charitable causes, secure sustainable improvements for the disadvantages and to raise awareness for not only the Princess’ personal charities, but for the needs of other charitable organizations around the world.

Princess Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, continue her legacy by devoting their time and resources to her favorite charities. In 2007, the princes hosted a concert at Wembley Stadium to celebrate her life. Many musicians donated their time and music to the event which was attended by a live audience of 60,000 and broadcast to more than 500 million homes around the world. The proceeds of the concert were divided amongst her favorite charities.

Princess Diana focused much of her attention on landmines and AIDS charity work; those causes were her top priorities and one would assume her favorite.
