Charities to Donate Furniture
From LoveToKnow Charity
If you are planning on redecorating your home and replacing your sofa and chairs, find charities to donate furniture to instead of throwing out your old pieces. There are many charities that accept furniture donations and in return you will get a tax credit. You can help out a charity while at the same time helping yourself!
What Charities to Donate Furniture To
There are many charities that accept furniture donations. You can locate many of them by searching your local yellow pages. Some will even pick up your unwanted furniture! The most important thing to do is to call first to make sure that the charity is currently accepting donations of furniture. Some charities to donate furniture to include:
- Goodwill Donation Centers will accept your new or gently used items — like furniture. They then will sell them in one of the Goodwill retail stores. The sales help fund job training and other career services.
- The Salvation Army operates stores that accept donations of household goods, clothing, books and even furniture. Purchases made at the stores help fund The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers.
- St. Vincent de Paul has thrift stores across the United States. These shops depend on donations of gently used items such as furniture. Donations can be made directly to the thrift stores. Furniture can also be picked up at no cost to the donor.
- Vietnam Veterans of America accepts donations of household goods, including furniture. Contact your local chapter to see what the organization's requirements are and what you need to do to make a furniture donation.
- Big Brothers Big Sisters also accepts furniture donations. Contact your local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter to see if they can use your unwanted pieces.
Another option to look into is Furniture Banks Across America. Furniture Banks connects furniture donors with those needing furniture assistance. Check the website for a listing of furniture banks in your area.
Other Organizations To Consider
By looking through your local yellow pages, you may be able to identify local charities to donate your unwanted furniture to. Some other organizations to consider donating your furniture to are:
- Your local church may know of a family in need that would welcome your furniture into their home.
- Help those who are without homes by donating your furniture to local homeless shelters or women's shelters.
- Senior citizen centers may be in need of furniture as well as elderly residents on fixed-incomes. Call to see if they could use your donation.
- Schools and community theatres accept furniture donations to use as props for their performances. Be sure to call first to make sure that they are in need of your unwanted pieces.
- Craigslist will allow you to advertise your free furniture to your entire community. There is no cost to list your items so nothing will come out of your pocket.
Furniture Donation Tips
Be courteous with your furniture donation. Many organizations are not able to clean dirty items or make repairs so make sure that your items are in the best condition possible. Try to clean any stains and make any repairs; the charity will appreciate the effort you took to make sure that the donation is in its best condition and you will be saving both time and resources for the charity as well.
