Cub Scout Fundraising

From LoveToKnow Charity

Cub scout fundraising is very important to many troops, since their yearly budgets depend upon it. There are many quality fundraising ideas that boys can take part in to keep their troop fully funded and functioning.

The Foundations of Fundraising

Fundraising, for any group or non-profit, is vital. However, since cub scouts are very young, your troop’s planned events may be their first venture into the world of raising money for a cause. You should keep this in mind when planning your fundraisers for the year – you, as a leader, will be teaching the kids the importance of working together and reaching goals.

Find someone from your troop leadership who can make a fundraising thermometer for the cub scouts. This will be colored in red at the various marked levels, so the children can see the progress they have made. You can also organize mini competitions between the boys to up the ante on their enthusiasm. Finally, be sure to choose fundraisers that are within the boys’ abilities to complete. Girl Scouts have their cookies, and boys should have something equally as simple and effective.

Fundraising Ideas

Below you will find some Cub Scout fundraising ideas to get you started with your yearly planning.

Candy Bars

Selling candy bars is a great way to earn some money for your troop. There are different places you can order fundraising chocolate, and there are plenty of ways to sell them. You can often ask local businesses, such as Wal-Mart, Target, and local grocery stores if you can set up a table outside to sell your candy.

As for the chocolate itself (or whatever type of candy you select), you can order it from various places. See’s Candy has a fundraising program where they will allow you to sell individual chocolate bars, lollipops, peanut brittle, and a selection of other items. You pay upfront for these, and then reimburse your troop with the profits. The Original One Dollar Bar is another option available to your troop. They have an impressive variety of candies and flavors, and the price cannot be beat.

Scratch Cards

Scratch cards are another effective fundraising idea. Cub scouts are given cards that they take to a certain number of people (usually around 25) and ask them to scratch off a section of the card. Whatever is revealed underneath, the scratcher agrees to pay the shown amount as a donation. As a thank you, the scratch card company provides you with a package of retailer coupons for your area that they can use at local restaurants and shops. You can purchase these scratch cards online and they can also be personalized to your specific troop.

Penny Drive

There isn’t anything much more adorable than a cub scout going door to door, so organize them into teams for a penny drive. Going to different neighborhoods, have the different teams “compete” against each other to see who can raise the most money just by knocking on doors and asking for pocket change. You will be surprised at how quickly those nickels and dimes add up! This is a great year round fundraiser, and with plenty of neighborhoods within driving distance, suburban troops will have unlimited options and can make it a regular monthly event.

Other Options

There are plenty of other fundraisers cub scouts can participate in. Bake sales, car washes and jog-a-thons are still good, reliable fundraising options that can supply a troop with the money they need without any (or very little) overhead costs. Gather a team of parents or troop leaders together to organize these fundraisers for the boys and help them on their way.
