Donate Furniture

From LoveToKnow Charity

Don’t let your unwanted furniture go unused, instead donate furniture to a local charity.

Why You Should Donate Furniture

Instead of throwing away your unwanted furniture, why not donate it to a charity accepting furniture as a donation? There are many people in need that will benefit from this type of donation. Often charities will directly donate the furniture to a needy family. Some charities will use the revenue from the sale of the furniture to help cover charity expenses. No matter what, the furniture will not go to waste.

Another reason to donate furniture is that you will be able to get a tax break for your contribution. Make sure that you get a receipt from the donation center for your records to use for your income tax return.

Furniture Considerations

When considering donating a piece of furniture, be sure that it is in usable condition. Do not donate items that are falling apart or heavily soiled. That will only make the charity deal with disposing the item, causing the charity both time and money, not you.

Once you have decided that you want to donate furniture try to make the piece as desirable as possible. Clean any stains that are visible and be sure that all pillows are attached. If any small hole or tears exist, try to repair them if possible. Organizations will appreciate the extra steps you take to make sure that your donation is the best it can be. In return, you will save the charity time and resources.

How To Donate Furniture

Some charities will pick up your furniture while others require you to drop it off on your own. Certain charities will only accept specific furniture donations so be sure to contact them first to inquire about their furniture donation specifications. For example, some charities may not accept upholstered pieces of furniture. Other charities may be looking for specific items such as office furniture that they want to use for their administrative office.

Some charities that accept furniture donations include:

  • Goodwill Donation Centers will accept your new or gently used items — like furniture. They then will sell them in one of the Goodwill retail stores. The sales help fund job training and other career services.
  • Salvation Army has family stores that accept donations of household goods, clothing, books and even furniture. Purchases made at the stores help fund The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers.
  • St. Vincent de Paul has thrift stores across the United States. The thrift stores depend on donations of gently used items such as furniture. Donations can be made directly to the thrift stores. Furniture can also be picked up at no cost to the donor.
  • Vietnam Veterans of America accepts donations of household goods. Contact your local chapter to see what their requirements are and what you need to do to donate furniture to their chapter.

Other places that may accept your furniture donation include:

  • Churches
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Homeless shelters
  • Women’s shelters

Check your local yellow pages for local charitable organizations that may accept furniture donations. Local thrift stores may also accept your furniture donation.

Finally, if you still can’t find somewhere to donate furniture to, contact a local school or community theatre whose theatrical group may want to use the item as a stage prop. You could also post the furniture on a free site such as Freecycle and offer the furniture for free to anyone interested..

I would check with your local Goodwill or Salvation Army to see if they offer pick up services. Your local yellow pages is great resource to check out as well!

I need to give away one year old furniture this week. What organizations in the Boston area can pick it up on Thursday?
