Donate Furniture in NJ
From LoveToKnow Charity
Knowing where to donate furniture in NJ can be a great way for you to contribute to your local community if you live in one of New Jersey’s many donation hubs. There are several donation spots accepting a furniture donation, as well as other ways to improve the lives of others with your old living room set.
Why Donate?
Donating furniture (or anything, really) is a wonderful idea for a few reasons. First and foremost, it is a simple way to clear out old or extra things from your living space while helping others at the same time. Rather than throwing that gently used couch in the trash, you can pass it on to a needy family or perhaps even a group of college kids looking for the perfect seating arrangement for their front porch. As the old saying goes, your trash may be someone else’s treasure, so if you live in NJ it may be worth your while to find out ways to help out someone down on their luck before you hand over your unwanted belongings to the garbage man.
Formal Donations
There are plenty of organizations throughout New Jersey that will take unwanted furniture off your hands. The Institute of Jewish Humanities, for example, will come pick up your furnishings free of charge, and provide you with immediate tax deduction documentation. Same day pick up is available, even on Sundays, and all you need to do is call (800) 507-GIVE to make an impact in the life of someone else. In the case of the Institute, your contribution will help them in their mission to teach young jewish adults and students about their roots and traditions. For more information, visit their donation website.
Interfaith Furnishings is another organization in the NJ area eager to take unwanted furniture off your hands. They take your tables, chairs, couches and many other household items and store them until someone less fortunate needs them to get started on the road to a better, more stable life. They currently collect furniture within Morris County, and will also accept outside of the county if you are able to deliver to their storage unit in Randolph. You can contact them by email to make a donation and receive an itemized tax deduction upon request.
Finally, there is Mine Hill, NJ’s Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which provides building materials and household needs for others. They accept gently used upholstered sofas and chairs, bed frames, dressers, tables, chairs and metal furniture. In some cases, they will pick up your donation, and in most cases, you will receive a tax deduction. Check out their website for details on all the other items that may be donated along with your furniture.
Other Ways to Donate Furniture in NJ
If you are still looking for a way to donate furniture in NJ, why not bless the life of someone else with the simple click of your computer mouse. Craigslist is a great resource; it is a huge, free classifieds website which includes a section for free community giveaways. Simply go to the New Jersey Craigslist site and click on the appropriate links to find the “free” section. List your furniture, specify who you would like to see it go to, and watch the responses pour in. Another way is to have a garage “sale” where things are free for the taking. This will lift your spirits as you watch friends, neighbors and complete strangers take your furniture and other unwanted belongings with excitement and see the faces of those who will be putting them to good use. Of course, with a garage giveaway, it is trickier to receive a tax deduction, but you may find you enjoy the feeling of benefiting others with little effort more than you will shaving off a few dollars at tax time.
There are plenty of other ways to donate furniture in NJ. Call your favorite non-profit and ask if your donation can help in any way. If not, chances are they can direct you toward someone who can use your old belongings more than a landfill can.
