Raising money for a good cause may seem difficult, but free fundraising sample letters can make the task easier by providing models to help you choose just the right words to solicit donations for your charity or event.
Fundraising Letters
Many of the best fundraising letters follow a particular format and style. They use successful direct marketing techniques, such as an introduction, a clear call to action, and a P.S. at the end.
Components of a Fundraising Letter
Fundraising letters are written in a variety of styles to suit the organization, event, and most importantly, the recipient of the letter. Most fundraising letters follow a similar format:
- Begin with a formal salutation, such as “Dear Mr. Johnson.” Customizing fundraising letters with the recipient’s name, if at all possible, has been shown to boost response rates.
- Share good news. Introduce the reason for your letter by sharing a bit about the event. Open the letter with a positive, upbeat statement about the event, such as “On May 1, thousands of pets and their owners will participate in Bark in the Park, an annual event to raise money for animal shelters across the area. Fluffy and I will lead the parade of pooches…”
- Describe in clear and precise terms what you are going to do, whether it’s participate in the Avon Breast Cancer three-day walk, pick up items for a charity bazaar, or another event. Make sure you include the reasons why you are holding this event, what you expect the outcomes to buy, and how you’d like help.
- Ask for the donation. List suggested amounts or ways people can help. Giving precise amounts, such as $25, $50, or $75 in the letter makes it easier for people to open their wallets than simply asking for whatever they can afford.
- Include a thank you for donating.
- Add a P.S. to the letter with the main points included so that if people quickly skim the letter, they will at least see the main point you want to get across in the postscript.
