Furniture Recycling Charities

From LoveToKnow Charity

If you're thinking of giving your home an overhaul—furniture included—you may want to check out a few furniture recycling charities. It's a win-win situation. You help others in need, whether your furniture goes straight to them or money from a furniture sale goes to charities that will then give back to the community. In return, you get the joy of knowing you helped an unfortunate individual or family and you also receive (in most cases) a non-taxable charitable donation deduction.

A Listing of Furniture Recycling Charities and More

There are quite a few charities that accept furniture. If your furniture is in good shape, why not donate it rather than let it collect dust or be thrown out with the garbage? There's a third option: donation.

Goodwill

Goodwill isn't exclusively a furniture recycling charity. They do, however, accept furniture that is in good condition along with clothing, appliances, and sometimes even automobiles. The furniture you donate will be sold in the Goodwill locations and the profits from those sales will be put back into the community through employment services and job training.

Freecycle.org

Freecycle isn't a charity, per se, but it is a way to give your old furniture to those in need. If you're familiar with Craigslist, Freecycle works in a similar way. You search based on location and then work out the pick-up or delivery details with the interested party. Everything listed on Freecycle is meant to be given away.

Choose2Care

Choose2Care is a non-profit organization that can take your used furniture and turn it into cash. From there, the cash goes to help the charities. How does it work? Simple: Internet auctions. They offer free pickup anywhere in the United States.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

You may be surprised to find out that Big Brothers Big Sisters accepts furniture donations. What they accept varies from location to location, so you'll have to call your local agency to find out if they can take the furniture you have to offer.

Furniture Bank

Furniture Bank accepts drop-offs between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 9:00 a.m. until noon on Saturday. You may also make arrangements to have furniture picked up. Be sure to check their list of unacceptable furniture items before making the trip. This organization is located in Toronto, Ontario.

Purple Heart

The Purple Heart Foundation accepts furniture donations in some states. Check their list of states and types of donations accepted for more information. The furniture will go to help veterans and their families.

Redo.org

Redo allows you to choose your state, then it lists the organizations that accept donations. In addition, they have a checklist of the types of donations they accept. For example, in Georgia, you'll get a list of four organizations, three of which accept furniture donations. From there, it's even broken down into the type of furniture—office or household. One will accept office furniture. The others are household only.

Global Recycle and Environmental Concern

If you're in the United Kingdom, the Global Recycle and Environmental Concern website may be of some use to you. They accept furniture from individuals and organizations that can be used for someone else's home. You don't even have to worry about how to get your furniture to them; just contact them and they will try to arrange a pick-up time with you. Furniture is not the only thing they accept, so if you have other items you'd like to try to see someone else reuse, check their site for a list of other things you can donate besides furniture.

A Final Word

There's no need to let your old furniture, or other items, accumulate in your attic or your basement. Nor is there any reason to simply throw it out if it's in good condition. If you don't want to deal with the hassle of having a garage sale or finding a taker on Craigslist, you can donate it to a charity with ease. Feel good, get a tax deduction, and clear out some space all at the same time.
