Golden Valley Humane Society
From LoveToKnow Charity
The Golden Valley Humane Society is one of five animal shelters affiliated with the Animal Humane Society. It is located in the city of Golden Valley, Minnesota. It provides adoption, microchipping, boarding, training and cremation services as well as many opportunities for education and volunteerism.
Visiting the Golden Valley Humane Society
The shelter has the same hours as all Animal Humane Society locations. They are:
- Monday through Friday, 10 to 6 for adoptions and 12 to 8 for surrenders
- Saturday, 10 to 6 for all business
- Sunday, 11 to 5 for all business
The address is 845 Meadow Lane, N; Golden Valley, MN 55422. It’s near the intersection of Meadow Lane and Dahlberg Drive off of Olson Memorial Highway. The phone number is 763-522-4325.
Adoption
The shelter welcomes visits by individuals looking to adopt a cat, dog, bird or small furry animal, such as a hamster. Adoptable animals, adoption requirements and a copy of the application are all available online through the Animal Humane Society’s website. Adoptions fees range from $5 to $300 or more, depending on the animal. All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered and have received basic medical treatment. The shelter advises new adopters to make a vet appointment within two weeks of adoption.
Microchipping
The Golden Valley Humane Society has a microchipping service to help lost pets find their way home. For a low fee, pet owners can have a coded microchip inserted underneath their pets’ skin. The microchip, which can be read by scanners at many animal shelters, allows the animal to be identified even without a collar or tags. People are invited to visit the shelter with their pets on scheduled Sundays and get a nail clip at the same time (sorry, pets only!).
Boarding
Pet boarding for dogs, cats and other animals is available 365 days a year. Pet owners are also invited to drop dogs off for daycare while they are at work. Dogs are kept in kennel runs and let outside four times per day. Walks and brushing sessions are available at an extra charge. Boarding hours are as follows for dropping off and picking up:
- Monday through Friday drop-off, 7 to 9:30
- Monday through Friday pick-up, 4 to 7
- Sunday (both), 4 to 7
Training
Dog training is available in the form of weekly courses at six different ability levels:
- Puppy kindergarten for dogs younger than five months
- Management skills for adult dogs and older puppies
- Basic obedience
- Obedience with distractions
- Consistent obedience and Canine Good Citizen readiness
- Obedience when not on a leash
Class admission is sold in two-month blocks. People can purchase four months at a time to receive a discount on the fees. Once dogs pass puppy kindergarten or management skills, they must take the higher level classes in succession.
Cremation
In the unfortunate event of the loss of a pet, the shelter offers cremation services. Families will receive the pet’s remains in a sealed container and a certificate of cremation. Urns are also available for sale. Owners that would rather not keep their pet’s remains can choose the communal cremation service instead for an extra charge.
Education and Volunteerism
Children are invited to attend summer camp at the shelter, where they will learn about caring for homeless animals and also help to support the mission. Other youth oriented activities include birthday parties, Girl Scout activities and service projects. The shelter holds a Walk for the Animals and other fundraisers each year and welcomes volunteers who wish to foster animals, provide veterinary assistance or work in the office. The management requests that those interested in working directly with the animals sign up for a long term commitment.
Donations of vehicles and money are also welcome. Both are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
