Purple Heart Clothing Donations

From LoveToKnow Charity

When you make Purple Heart clothing donations, you are helping to fund services for veterans and their families through The Military Order of the Purple Heart.

What is The Military Order of the Purple Heart?

A national organization chartered by Congress, the Military Order of the Purple Heart was formed in 1932. The organization was started for the protection and interest of military personnel that received the Purple Heart medal, a medal of honor, as the result of a combat related injury. If a member of the military dies as the result of combat, the medal is given to a family member.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart, commonly referred to as the Purple Heart Charity, serves all veterans and their families, not just those that received the Purple Heart.

How Your Donation Helps Veterans Services

Through the non-profit Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, donations are accepted and used to support the various programs of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

The organization provides many programs and services pertaining to the health and welfare of veterans and their families including:

  • Participating in, sponsoring and supporting rehabilitation programs for veterans with disabilities and handicaps including amputees, the blind and paraplegics.
  • Servicing veterans living in remote areas through outreach programs.
  • Maintaining a Service Officers Program that provide individual free counseling and assists with benefits and claims processing.

Funding for the veterans’ services comes from donations made to the organization. Many of the donations are clothing and household goods. These items are not given directly to the veterans. The donated items are sold to thrift shops throughout the country generating the much needed revenue for the programs and services.

Making Purple Heart Clothing Donations

If you have clothing or household items that you no longer want that are in usable condition, donating them to the Purple Heart Charity is a way to give something back to the men and women that served our country.

Making a Purple Heart clothing donation is simple to do. Once you have gathered all the clothing you are going to donate, call the Purple Heart Pick-up Service to schedule an appointment to have the items picked up.

Donation Guidelines

  • Although the organization accepts all clothing items, certain things are greatly needed. Visit the request page to view a list of needed items.
  • For income tax purposes all donations to the organization are tax deductible at the fair market value of the donated items. The term fair market value means the price a buyer will pay and the seller will accept.
  • The Purple Heart organization requests that you have several bags or boxes for donation before requesting pick-up service. This is done to ensure the pick up generates enough funds to offset the costs of running and maintaining the truck. Pick-ups are scheduled for specific areas on the same day. Often people ask friends and family to gather clothing they no longer want and donate it all at the same time.
  • You do not need to be at home for the donation pick- up. Mark the bags or boxes for the Purple Heart and place them at your curb by 7 a.m. the morning of the scheduled pick-up.
  • The organization does not accept donations of baby items such as play pens, car seats, cribs or high chairs.

Other Donations to The Military Order of the Purple Heart

In addition to clothing and household items, The Military Order of the Purple Heart also accepts other types of donations.

  • Small household items are usually accepted at the same locations as clothing
  • Monetary donations
  • Furniture is accepted at some locations
  • Vehicles are accepted at some locations
  • Unsaleable clothing is sold in bulk to companies that recycle textiles

Purple Heart clothing donations are a wonderful way to recycle usable clothing while helping raise money for much needed services for veterans and their families.
