Any Purple Heart donations that are accepted are used to help veterans and their families. The Military Order of the Purple Heart charitable organization was started in 1932 as a support system for those who have earned the Purple Heart medal in combat. The organization accepts donations of everything from clothing to cars to money. It is very easy to donate thanks to pick-up services, readily available contact information, and more.
Accepted Purple Heart Donations
So which types of donations are accepted?
- Cars and other vehicles (at some locations)
- Furniture and other household goods (types vary by location)
In most cases, it's best to call your local chapter ahead of time to find out which types of donations they accept. Also find out what types of donations they will pick up.
To find a location near you and to determine whether they are equipped to taking vehicle donations, call 888-414-4483. You'll be walked through a menu in order to find the best location relative to where you live or work.
You may also have luck locating a chapter near you that will pick up your items on the donation information page.
When you find one, you can arrange for the car to be towed or you can drive it to the location. If you do decide to have it towed, they will also pick up your keys and title, and the towing costs will be deducted from your donation.
To donate clothing, you can also call 1-888-414-4483 or visit the Donation Pick-up List to find out which location is closest to you. Purple Heart donations of clothing include used but still useable items. If you do have clothes to donate, you can still arrange for a pickup. You don't necessarily have to go out of your way to take your discarded items to their location.
You don't even have to visit your local chapter to donate money. You can do it online or by mailing a check. Also, you can donate in honor or in memory of someone else if you'd like. To donate by check, you can send it to: MOPH Service Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 49, Annandale, VA 22003.
If you want to donate by credit card, simply visit the Purple Heart Foundation's Donation Page and click "Donate Now!" to enter in your Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover information.
If you decide to donate in memory or in honor of someone else, the best way to do so is by contacting the Purple Heart Foundation at 703-256-6139. That way, they can get the payment information as well as the mailing address of the person you're donating for.
Furniture and Other Household Goods
The same pick-up information above applies to furniture and other household goods, but you'll want to check ahead of time to see if your closest location can accept the items you have to give.
Donate to the Purple Heart Foundation
Donating to the Purple Hearts Foundation is one significant way to say thank you to the veterans who have served and, in some cases, the families they've left behind. They make it easy for you to donate by offering several locations with pick-up services, including tow truck arrangements when you wish to donate your vehicle. Even easier than that (assuming you haven't gone through a bout of spring cleaning and accumulated a mound of items you'd love to see go to a good cause, stat), you can call and donate money, mail in a check, or enter your credit card information online. There are many ways to complete Purple Heart donations and show your appreciation while helping veterans in need.
