Ramsey County Humane Society
From LoveToKnow Charity
The Ramsey County Humane Society in St. Paul is part of the Animal Humane Society, a group of five shelters in the Upper Midwest. Its main goal is providing shelter and adoptions for homeless animals, but it also offers additional related services.
Shelter Animals
A complete list of animals available for adoption at all of the five shelters is available on the Animal Humane Society’s website. Users can search by location to find dogs, cats and small animals that they can adopt through the Ramsey County Humane Society. The shelter is open seven days a week for adoptions and animal surrenders. They are closed nine days a year for holidays. These days are:
- New Year’s Day
- MLK Day
- Easter Sunday
- Memorial Day
- Idependance Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day and Eve
Hours are 10 to 6 for surrenders and 12 to 8 for adoptions, Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday hours are 10 to 6 and 11 to 5, respectively. There are fees for both surrendering and adopting animals to help offset the cost of caring for animals while they are at the shelter. This includes the cost of microchipping, altering and vaccinating all shelter residents. In most cases, fees are nonnegotiable. However, senior citizens can receive discounts on adoption fees through the Purina Pets for Seniors program.
Adoption Philosophy
This humane society is considered a no-kill shelter, since animals can stay until they are adopted regardless of how long it takes. However, it also accepts all animals, including those who are sick or have extreme behavioral problems. While every effort is made at rehabilitation, there is no guarantee that every animal surrendered will be considered adoptable and those that aren’t will be humanely euthanized. Those who surrender animals but want to know that they’ve found forever homes can pay a fee to get a one-time update. If the shelter deems the animal unadoptable, they can pick up the animal and consider other options.
Other Programs at the Ramsey County Humane Society
The shelter has a microchipping clinic every first Sunday of the month from 1 to 3. During the clinic, pet owners can also get their dogs’ nails trimmed. Appointments are not necessary as long as owners stop by during the designated time period.
There is also a summer camp for youth that takes place during July and early August for both elementary and middle school-aged children. It has a day camp format and is divided into one-week sessions. Campers learn about caring for animals and how to pursue animal-related careers in the future. Registration is available online beginning in March of each year. The fee includes special trips and service projects, plus a water bottle, backpack and t-shirt.
Finally, the shelter offers numerous opportunities for volunteers. They can choose to work in the shelter, either caring for animals or working in the office. There are also positions available fostering animals and helping with special events. All volunteers must be 16 years old or 14 if a parent is volunteering with them. Long term commitments are strongly preferred.
Giving To the Shelter
The shelter relies on gifts from individuals and corporations to fund the majority of its operating budget. Shelter staff accept monetary donations, stock and vehicles that go to support the animals. Since the shelter is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, contributions are tax-deductible. There are planned giving programs for those who wish to donate on a regular basis. Nonmonetary items the shelter accepts include newspapers, cardboard toilet paper tubes, plastic bags, blankets and towels, dog and cat toys and food. The items with the greatest need are featured on the online wish list.
