Sheboygan County Humane Society
From LoveToKnow Charity
The Sheboygan County Humane Society is located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It is an animal shelter that houses abandoned dogs, cats and pocket pets, such as rabbits and hamsters, for the purpose of finding them new forever homes.
Adoptions
Like most animal shelters, the Sheboygan County Humane Society has rules about who can adopt their pets. They are as follows:
- All adopters must be 18 years of age or older.
- Adopters must keep their new pets for life or return them to the shelter if extenuating circumstances occur. They cannot sell or give them away to others.
- Cats and most dogs need to be kept inside with the family, not left outdoors most of the time.
- People who have recently surrendered a pet cannot adopt a new one.
- Renters need to get approval before adopting and have to have been leasing for three months or more.
The shelter has a list of available pets on Petfinder. Potential adopters should visit the shelter to meet their new best friend, bringing along all household members, including other pets. Adoption hours are as follows:
- Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 4:30
- Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 6:30
- Saturdays from noon to 4:00
The shelter is not open on Sundays. Adoption applications and fees are required. Fees vary depending on the type and age of the animal. All shelter animals are altered (spayed or neutered) and vaccinated before they are adopted out. Cats are not declawed unless it was done prior to the shelter acquiring them. The organization does not support this practice.
Giving Up Pets
This animal shelter will take in pets if owners can no longer care for them. However, they do ask that people call ahead instead of just showing up to drop them off. The phone number is 920-458-2012. They do charge modest fees for surrendering. In 2009, the fees were $35 for unaltered cats and dogs, $25 for altered and $5 for pocket pets. They also ask that you give them the pet’s medical records and some information about why you are giving up the animal. This will help them get the pets the vet care they need and assist in placing them with new families. Note that this humane society is not a no-kill shelter and does not guarantee placement.
Spaying and Neutering
The Sheboygan County Humane Society has a low-cost spay and neuter program that can help with the cost of altering animals. The shelter offers the Spay Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) right at their office. The 2009 price was $35. They also offer vaccinations, heartworm tests and other basic veterinary services for an additional charge. Appointments are required. All SNAP participants must be licensed. Licenses are available through the shelter as well.
Donations
The humane society is happy to accept donations of items that will benefit the pets at the shelter. This includes pet food, bedding, toys and cleaning supplies. They also accept money and gift cards, especially those for gasoline or to all purpose stores like Wal-Mart. Donations are tax deductible. Often the shelter has special fund raising promotions, such as selling hearts for Valentine’s Day.
Those wishing to give time instead of money or goods can volunteer at the shelter or foster animals in their homes. Volunteer orientation is the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the shelter. A foster application is available at the shelter’s website.
Getting To the Shelter
The humane society is located at 3107 North 20th Street. The closest intersection is 21st Street and Mayflower Avenue. It is easily accessible form Green Bay, Milwaukee and Plymouth.
