What Is The Sierra Club
The Sierra Club is America's oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization. It strives to protect our communities and the planet.
Mission of the Sierra Club Foundation
The Foundation of the Sierra Club is a public charity who provides support to the Sierra Club. It is their belief that everyone has a right to a safe and healthy environment. They believe that clean air, clean water, open spaces and wild lands need to be protected and preserved for the future generations.
The Foundation’s official mission statement is "The Mission of The Foundation is to advance the preservation and protection of the natural environment by empowering the citizenry, especially democratically-based grassroots organizations, with charitable resources to further the cause of environmental protection. The Sierra Club is the vehicle through which the Foundation generally fulfills its charitable mission."
Foundation Funding
The Foundation provides funding for environmental projects that fall into one of the following three categories:
- Public education
- Litigation
- Training
Unsolicited proposals are not accepted by the Foundation. Financial support for the Foundation comes from the following sources:
- Individual donors
- Individual foundations
Programs of The Foundation
The Foundation is committed to a sustainable future. It has several programs that support the commitment and environmental challenges.
Grizzly Bear Project
The grizzly bear is sensitive to the effects of development. It is an essential species for the ecosystems of the Northern Rockies.
Environmental Justice Grassroots Organizing Project
Both the Foundation and the Sierra Club are concerned with the rights of disadvantaged communities. This program exists to safeguard their health and well-being by protecting the environment where they live.
Northwest Salmon Project
The salmon in Snake River’s basin are close to slipping into extinction. The program wants the four dams on the Lower Snake River to be partially removed to prevent this from happening.
Shasta Alpine Lodge at Horse Camp
Shasta Alpine Lodge is a climbers' hut at Horse Camp located within the Mount Shasta Wilderness of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It is a popular base camp for climbers and hikers on Mount Shasta. The Foundation owns the property and operates the Lodge. The Lodge is a seasonal source of fresh water and also serves as an emergency shelter.
Inner City Outings
Inner City Outings are an example of how the Sierra Club brings its message of environmental stewardship into urban communities. These outings show that many youth who grow up in urban environments lack exposure to nature due to their economical situations. The outings exist to take youth on excursions that will allow them to experience the outdoors in a safe and fun environment. Some outings include kayaking in Florida, backpacking in California and tree-planting in Pennsylvania.
Planned Giving
Planned giving makes it possible for you to make a lasting contribution that will ensure that the environment will be protected for future generations. There are various planned giving options available such as:
- Bequests
- Retirement plan assets
- Life income gifts
Another planned giving option is the Rachel Carson Society which honors and recognizes individuals who make a commitment to the environment by including the Sierra Club or The Foundation in their estate plans.
