About The Streisand Foundation

The Streisand Foundation was founded in 1986 as a way to funnel money to worthy charitable causes. The foundation chooses from a variety of causes and selects the organizations doing work associated with the main intent of the foundation. In particular, this foundation donates money to causes working toward:

  • Advocacy issues for the environment
  • Women's advocacy groups
  • Organizations designed to promote civil liberties
  • Organizations promoting civil rights
  • Youth advocacy groups for disadvantaged children residing within the Los Angeles area
  • AIDS organizations

The foundation has donated millions of dollars in grants to causes falling within the above categories. Money is only given to organizations that fall into the category of non-profit 501(c)(3), and the charity must be based within the United States. Organizations must also work on a national level before they will be considered for a grant.

Causes

Charitable organizations that have received grants from the Streisand Foundation include:

  • The National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund
  • The Center for Public Integrity
  • The Human Rights Campaign Foundation
  • The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

In addition to receiving the monetary grant, some organizations also receive a direct hyperlink to their website on the foundation's website, potentially increasing site visits and awareness of the organization.

Grants

The grants that the Streisand Foundation give range in average amounts of $1,000 to $25,000. Organizations can apply for a grant by submitting a written request through the mail. The following information must be included:

  • The amount of money the organization is requesting
  • A full description of the organization's history and mission
  • A brief description of the proposed use of the grant money, including a detailed timeline of how the funds will be used
  • Proof of the organization's status as a non profit 501(c)3, usually in the form of an IRS designation letter
  • A copy of the organization's budget
  • A complete contact list for the organization's board of directors

Organizations requesting grants may receive a different amount of money than they originally requested, whether it is more or less money.

Deadlines and Requests

Requests for grants are not accepted year round. Requests must be sent in to the foundation within the timeline allotted by the foundation for receiving requests. The timeline is subject to change from year to year. Requesting a grant through this foundation does not guarantee that the money will be given. This foundation, like other foundations, reviews grant requests and makes the decision as to which causes to give money to and which to not give money to. Organizations that fall within the foundation's scope of causes will have a much better chance of receiving a grant than organizations which do not.
