Waukesha Wisconsin Humane Society

From LoveToKnow Charity

The Waukesha Wisconsin humane society is better known as the Humane Animal Welfare Society. The shelter rescues cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and other domestic animals and also rehabilitates wildlife. It accepts all common companion animals, without restrictions due to breed, temperament, age and health.

Adopting from the Waukesha Wisconsin Humane Society

The adoption process at the shelter is as follows:

  1. Potential adopter searches the list of available pets.
  2. He or she fills out an application either online or in person.
  3. An adoption counselor looks over the application to insure compatibility with the pet.
  4. The person is invited to come to the shelter to interact with the animal in one of the interview rooms.
  5. The application is approved and the new adopter can pick the pet up after waiting a mandatory 24 hours.
  6. A shelter employee makes a follow-up call to ensure the new relationship is working out.

All adopters must be 18 or older, have valid photo identification, prove that they own their homes or have landlord approval and obtain consent from all adult household members. They also have to promise to get their pets altered, if needed, and have three weeks to do so. Finally they must agree, in writing, to return adoptees to the shelter if they can no longer keep them.

All pets have adoption fees ranging from $5 to $150. The exact fee depends on the animal. It includes microchipping, vaccinations, a heartworm or feline leukemia test (if applicable) and spay or neuter surgery performed at the facility. The shelter invites people to submit applications ahead of time if they are looking to find a specific breed so that they can be notified when one comes in.

Educational Seminars

The shelter offers dozens of classes throughout the year to educate both pet owners and animal professionals. Some common topics include:

  • Canine behavior problems
  • Keeping pet birds
  • Rabbit care
  • Raising a puppy
  • Animal first aid

There are also monthly volunteer orientation meetings and dog training classes, including basic and intermediate obedience, puppy socialization and trick training. To enroll a pet in a training class, the number to call is 262-542-8851, extension 118. A complete meeting calendar is available online.

Kids at the Waukesha Wisconsin Humane Society

The society has a very active program for children ages 8 to 12. It includes both an animal education group and a summer camp. The education group meets one Friday evening per month while school is in session. During meetings, kids learn about the shelter and caring for animals, but they also participate in social activities, such as pizza and game night. It’s only $30 to join.

The summer camp, known as Kids ‘N Critters Day Camp, takes place during June, July and August. There are two-day sessions and week-long sessions that focus on animal care, as well as an art camp and a horseback riding camp. All sessions are 9 to 4. More information is available at the shelter.

Helping the Humane Society

Those looking to help the shelter, by donating funds or donating time, have several options. They can donate money directly through the organization’s website, sponsor a special event, provide a scholarship for a child to attend the summer camp, buy a memorial plaque, attend the fall fundraiser or pet walkathon or send a corporate gift through their workplace. Supplies are also appreciated, including pet food, leashes, collars, fleece blankets, printer paper, stamps and dish detergent. The best way to find out more about giving is to call the development office at 262-542-8851 x107.
