Wishes and Dreams

Everyone has different wishes and dreams of things they hope to do during their lifetime. For some it may be taking a family vacation or visiting a loved one that has moved away. Others may dream of seeing their favorite football team play a game or going to hear their favorite music group perform.

Many people put off their wishes and dreams to the future. But for those diagnosed with a terminal illness their future is now. Dreams and wishes are tucked deep underneath the pain and suffering of everyday life. Living with a life-limiting illness often drains financial and emotional resources causing more strain on families as they struggle with the daily battle of their illness.

For some dreams and wishes change as life changes. Dreams of a new wheelchair or hearing aid, dinner at a favorite restaurant or a few hours at a beach feeling the warmth of the sun seems unattainable for many with a terminal illness.

With the help of organizations that grant wishes to adults, dreams are fulfilled and wishes are granted to terminally ill adults. Many of the dreams involve a terminally ill parent that wants to create a lasting happy memory for their children to have once they have passed from this earth.

The Dream Foundation

The Dream Foundation founded by Thomas Rollerson in 1994 was the first organization to grant wishes to adults aged 18 and over. Mr. Rollerson created the foundation after being told by a wish granting foundation that his partner was too old for charity support. The organization's help was only for children. Since its beginning the Dream Foundation has helped more than seven thousand terminally ill people, each diagnosed with less than one year to live, to enjoy the experience of having a dream come true. Many of the dreams granted required no outlay of cash. Approximately 75% of all the granted wishes are filled with non-cash donations including:

  • Frequent flier air miles
  • Hotel rooms
  • Meals at restaurants
  • Tickets to amusement parks and events
  • Medical supplies

Her Heart's Wish

A national organization, Her Heart's Wish, grants wishes for women that are terminally ill with a life expectancy of two years or less. Wishes have been granted to women between 18 and 78.

Her Heart's Wish was founded in memory of a young mother battling ovarian cancer for several years. As she new her life would soon end, her wish was to bake cookies with her two children and spend a few days on vacation with her husband. Her wishes were both filled by her caregivers. They provided the necessary treatments so the young mother could bake cookies with her children and gave her a Valentine weekend at Cape Cod with her husband. Although the young mother died shortly after returning home from the weekend trip, her dream of helping other women realize their final dream is a reality.

The first wish granted by Her Heart's Wish was for a woman who wanted to see the fall foliage of Pennsylvania. A simple dream that would have been impossible without the help of the many supporters and volunteers of this charitable organization.
